What Is a Vehicle History Report?

By Automotive Data Engineering Team • • 6 min read

A commercial vehicle history report aggregates verified administrative records and mechanical events tied to a VIN. Learn about key fields and data structures.

A vehicle history report is a chronological compilation of administrative, operational, and mechanical records tied to a vehicle's unique 17-character VIN. In the United States, commercial automotive stakeholders rely on these reports to establish asset provenance, verify title legality, and evaluate residual value.

Primary Data Categories in a Commercial Vehicle History Report

1. Title Brand Registrations

When a state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues a vehicle title, statutory brands may be applied if the vehicle sustained severe damage or total loss payouts. Essential title brands include:

  • Salvage: Applied when repair costs exceed a state-mandated percentage of the vehicle's pre-damage fair market value.
  • Rebuilt / Prior Salvage: Indicates a salvage vehicle has undergone state-certified safety inspections and been returned to roadworthy status.
  • Flood / Water Damage: Identifies immersion in water up to or over the vehicle floorboards.
  • Lemon Law / Manufacturer Buyback: Issued when a manufacturer repurchases a vehicle due to persistent, unrepairable warranty defects.

2. Odometer Progression & Rollback Auditing

Federal law (the Truth in Mileage Act) requires accurate odometer disclosure during title transfers. Vehicle history reports document recorded mileage events from state safety inspections, emissions stations, and dealer service records to flag mathematical discrepancies and potential odometer rollback fraud.

3. Ownership & Operational Classifications

Reports distinguish between personal ownership, corporate lease, commercial fleet service, daily rental usage, and municipal/police service. Commercial and rental usage often carries higher wear-and-tear assumptions in valuation models.

Commercial Use vs. Retail Inquiries

While individual car shoppers view consumer reports, commercial enterprises (such as auto dealerships and wholesale auctions) consume vehicle history data via REST APIs to batch-evaluate hundreds of vehicles simultaneously.
